Mitral prolapse

🫀 Mitral Valve Prolapse: What Is It Really?

Mitral valve prolapse is a very common condition, often discovered by chance during a check-up or an echocardiogram.

It means that one of the two “leaflets” of the mitral valve moves a bit more than normal, without necessarily affecting the proper functioning of the heart.

💬 Symptoms (when present)

Many people have no symptoms at all. When symptoms do occur, they may include:

• Palpitations

• Fatigue

• Chest pain not related to exertion

• Shortness of breath

Remember: these symptoms can have many other causes and should be evaluated by a doctor.

🔍 How is it diagnosed?

The most useful test is the echocardiogram, which allows direct visualization of the valve’s movement and the possible presence of regurgitation (a small amount of blood flowing back into the atrium).

🧡 Is it dangerous?

In most cases, no.

Mitral valve prolapse isbenignand does not limit daily life.

It only requires periodic follow-ups to monitor the valve over time.

🏃‍♂️ Can I exercise?

In most cases, yes, without any specific restrictions.

Your cardiologist will evaluate individually based on the presence and severity of regurgitation or other factors.

🩺 When is it important to get checked?

• If new symptoms appear

• If regurgitation is moderate or severe

• During pregnancy, to plan appropriate monitoring

📌 Final message

Mitral valve prolapse is a very common and often harmless condition. With regular check-ups and a healthy lifestyle, most people live without any limitations.
