Alessandro Durante MD
Cardiologist

Dr. Alessandro Durante is Head of the Clinical and Interventional Cardiology Unit at Policlinico San Marco.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 2008 from Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan, and in 2014 he completed his specialization in Cardiovascular Diseases at the same University.

Over the years, he has continued his professional training by attending advanced courses in Italy – including a specialization in vascular echo-Doppler at the Centro Cardiologico Monzino, University of Milan – as well as internationally, attending the European Vascular Genomic Network Summer School in Krakow, Poland.

During his residency, he began collaborating with IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, where he gained extensive experience in clinical ward management, working in the Coronary Intensive and Sub-Intensive Care Units, the Cardiology-Hemodynamics Unit, and Cardiac Rehabilitation. There, he also expanded his expertise in both invasive and non-invasive diagnostics, focusing primarily on performing coronary angiography and coronary angioplasty as a first operator, as well as percutaneous structural cardiac interventions.

His medical career continued through collaborations with hospital institutions in Como, initially as a resident physician and later as Director of the Departmental Hemodynamics Unit (Unità Operativa Semplice Dipartimentale Emodinamica).

Over the years, he has refined his technical skills in: coronary angiography, complex coronary angioplasty including the placement of circulatory support devices, carotid and peripheral angioplasty. He also performs percutaneous treatment of congenital heart disease, percutaneous valvular interventions, left atrial appendage closure, temporary and permanent pacemaker implantation, and transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography.

In 2021, he began working at Policlinico San Marco, where he currently serves as Head of the Cardiology Unit.

Throughout his career, he has participated in research fellowships at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, Imperial College London (UK), and at the Center of Excellence for Cardiovascular Biology, Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, Milan. He has also contributed to numerous national and international randomized multicenter clinical trials.

He is a member of the following professional societies:

Dr. Durante also serves on the advisory boards of several multinational healthcare companies and works as a consulting interventional cardiologist for U.S.-based biomedical companies involved in the development, manufacturing, and commercialization of medical devices.

He has served as a lecturer for multiple academic courses at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University of Milan. He is currently an academic editor for the scientific journal Medicine and a reviewer for several international scientific journals (Lancet, Medicine, BMJ Case Reports, Angiology, Cardiology, Journal of Diabetes and Endocrinology, International Journal of Cardiology, Expert Review of Cardiovascular Therapy, European Journal of Clinical Investigation, Nutrition Reviews).

Dr. Durante is author and co-author of numerous scientific articles published in national and international journals, and he has participated in a wide range of national and international conferences and congresses, frequently as an invited speaker.
