Carotid Ultrasound

Carotid Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic test that allows the study of the carotid arteries, the main blood vessels that carry blood to the brain.

It is a fundamental examination for the prevention and diagnosis of cerebrovascular diseases, such as stroke.

What is it used for?

This test allows:

  • evaluation of blood flow in the carotid arteries

  • detection of narrowing (stenosis) or blockages

  • identification of atherosclerotic plaques

  • monitoring of known conditions over time

It is particularly useful in patients with cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, or smoking.

When is it indicated?

A doctor may prescribe a carotid Doppler ultrasound in the presence of:

  • dizziness or episodes of loss of consciousness

  • transient neurological symptoms (TIA)

  • suspected atherosclerotic disease

  • carotid bruits detected during physical examination

  • routine follow-up in at-risk patients

How is the exam performed?

Carotid Doppler ultrasound is a simple, painless, and risk-free examination.

  • the patient lies on an examination table

  • a gel is applied to the neck area

  • the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to visualize the arteries

  • the exam usually lasts 15–20 minutes

No specific preparation is required.

Is it a safe exam?

Yes. Carotid Doppler ultrasound uses ultrasound waves and not ionizing radiation, so it can be performed safely, even repeatedly over time.

What can be seen with carotid Doppler ultrasound?

Thanks to Doppler technology, the exam allows the observation of:

  • the structure of the arterial walls

  • the presence of plaques or calcifications

  • the speed and direction of blood flow

This information helps the doctor assess the risk of cerebrovascular events and determine the most appropriate treatment.

After the exam

At the end of the examination, the patient can immediately resume normal activities.

The report is usually provided immediately or within a short time and will be discussed with the referring physician or specialist.

In conclusion

Carotid Doppler ultrasound is a key tool for stroke prevention and for monitoring vascular health.

It is a simple, fast, and safe exam that can make a significant difference in the early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases.
